The Marmore Falls: Natural Wonder Between History and Spectacle

In the heart of Umbria, just a few kilometers from Terni, lies one of the most fascinating and scenic waterfalls in Europe: the Marmore Falls. With a total drop of 165 meters, divided into three leaps, this artificial waterfall is not only an engineering masterpiece dating back to Roman times, but also a natural oasis that attracts thousands of visitors every year.

A history spanning more than two thousand years

The Marmore Waterfall is not the exclusive result of nature: it was created in 271 B.C. by the Roman consul Manio Curio Dentato to reclaim the marshy area of the Velino River, which was stagnating near Rieti, causing sanitary and agricultural problems. The water was piped into the Nera River via an artificial canal, giving rise to what we know today as the waterfall.

Over the centuries, the waterfall was modified several times, particularly in the Middle Ages and modern times, until it took its present form. The most significant intervention was in the 18th century with engineer Andrea Vici, who made the flow of water more stable and contributed to the current scenic appearance.

A live experience

Today, Marmore Falls is part of a nature park equipped with trails, scenic areas, hiking trails and guided tours. There are six trails of varying difficulty that allow visitors to explore the surrounding landscape and admire the waterfall from various perspectives: from below, where the water roars with all its power, or from above, where a breathtaking view of the valley opens up.

One of the most characteristic aspects is the management of the water flow, which is still regulated by a dam.The waterfall, in fact, “works” at set times, turning into a true natural spectacle when it is “opened” and the water starts rushing down. Consulting the opening hours is essential to fully enjoy your visit.

A romantic and cultural symbol

During the Grand Tour, Marmore Falls became an unmissable stop for European poets, painters and travelers. Lord Byron was so impressed that he described it as a “sublimated horror,” capable of evoking powerful and conflicting emotions. To this day, the beauty of the waterfall continues to inspire artists and photographers.
